JSAC 2013
Japan on the Edge
at
University of Saskatchewan,
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan,
October 4 - 6, 2013
The continuing transitions within Japan present the country with a daunting
array of challenges and opportunities. The country finds itself, through
a series of developments connected to both internal and external forces, on the
edge between nuclear power and alternative energy supplies, between North
Korea, South Korea, China and Russia on boundary matters, between a generation
as an industrial powerhouse and an emerging position as a post-industrial
nation, between the prospect of global climate change and the possibilities of
become "Green Japan," between the prospect and the consequences of a
rapidly aging society, between a period of political uncertainty and a possible
return to LDP-led stability, and between the completing commercial influences
of Asia and the West. This age of transitions promises to test to
creativity, resolve and competing forces within Japanese society and between
Japan and the broader world.
JSAC 2013 will host a series of panels related to the theme of "Japan on
the Edge," but will remain true to its tradition of providing Canada' best
forum for the exchange of ideas, new research and professional insights into
Japanese culture, society and business. Paper and panel proposals are welcomed
from Canada-based scholars of Japan, Japan-based academics and commentators,
Japan specialists from other countries, and graduate students. A special
professional seminar may be organized for graduate students.
JSAC 2013 will be held in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, the fastest growing city in
Canada, at the University of Saskatchewan, arguably the country's most
attractive campus. Our Friday meeting will be held at Wanuskewin
Heritage Park, a truly special First Nations culture centre on the outskirts of
the city. The Saturday and Sunday meetings, which
includes a banquet on Saturday night at the University Club, will be
held at the Diefenbaker Centre, home to the Johnson-Shoyama
Graduate School of Public Policy. JSAC 2013, organized by Dr. Carin Holroyd, Department of Political Studies, University
of Saskatchewan, promises to be intellectually exciting and, in the
long-standing tradition of the Japan Studies Association of Canada, one of the
most collegial and welcoming conferences in the country. Application has
been made for financial assistance for JSAC 2013. If the request is
successful, JSAC 2013 will be in a position to provide financial assistance for
travel and accommodations.
